MLM Forum: Twitter 101

by Steve Shoemaker on April 28, 2010

%keyword“I’m not breaking up with you it’s just time we started maybe…..seeing other people.”  long awkward pause “What do you mean other people?”  think fast, think fast “Look this has been great it’s just I’m not ready to settle down just yet….you know?”

It’s funny but when I started getting curious about other marketing methods and social media’s I felt the same kind of dread  this bloke above me did. When you get comfortable with something it’s hard to change and that’s OK hopefully this means you given yourself time to explore it, master it and become successful at it.

But on the same token refusal to grow and try other things can lead to stagnation and loss of interest. The MLM system I advocate teaches it’s students to be seen in as many places as you can and brand yourself as an authority and as a leader in your niche or business.

This can be done effectively and without info overload or spreading yourself to thin if done in the right way. Get proficient at a couple of things then start expanding slowly into others…And I would never advocate trading in your wife or girlfriend got it? Good.

So who’s the new gal you ask……….Twitter!

What’s Twitter is the first thing I asked when I first started hearing about it a couple of years ago. People gave me their own versions of it but when I started doing  my in depth research I think I can aptly define Twitter now:

Definition: A free social messaging tool that lets people stay connected through brief text message updates up to 140 characters in length. Twitter is based on users answering the question “What are you doing?” They then post their thoughts, observations, and goings-on in their day. Updates are posted on users Twitter profile page through SMS text messaging, the Twitter Web site, instant messaging, RSS, e-mail, or through other social applications and sites, such as Facebook.

The brainchild of Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone as of March 2010 Twitter celebrated it’s 4th birthday. #12 already in the Alexa Rankings with 33% of the sites traffic right here in the United States and that number is predicted to dramatically increase in the near future.

Is Twitter the monster in the closet? I don’t know but I do think it is worth looking into. So I am. There is a lot of potential  business by developing a healthy twitter following but you have to have the energy and focus to stay current and in the loop.

It’s the same with Twitter as all social media’ s in general you will fade away into the background if all you do is push your opportunity or your affiliates. But the people who can blend it with interesting and entertaining posts and devote about 25% of their tweets to their opportunity and other MLM Programs marketers can fair very well using this strategy.

So to start with on this post we will just cover a few basic terms and move into more advanced topics in later posts.

1. Follower: Someone who likes your tweets, or has an interest in what they see on your account and have chosen to “follow” you and receive your tweets as you post them and of course you can and should do the same with others. Since they basically opted in there is no problem with delivery as E-mail marketing.

2. @reply: You see this when you choose to reply to someone’s tweet. These tweets can be viewed by them and their followers and you and yours.

3. d: placing a d in front of your username, a follower can send you a direct message or vice versa that is only viewed by you and them.

4. Retweet: Let’s say you see a tweet you find entertaining or educational or whatever and you want to make sure more people see it you can use the retweet option or place an rt in front of the tweet in your message box and redistribute the content.

Ok that’s a rap for now. I think before you dive into Twitter using it in a business context without understanding it and maximizing it’s effectiveness can be tweacherous. Twitter me this..where do you think Twitter is headed and how does it affect how we will do things with networking in the future? I would love to hear back from you on this. So if you find this helpful please comment and click on the Facebook and (of course) the Retweet  buttons at the top. Thanks for reading and until next time.

Good article on the basics of twitter. Being new and with only 300 something followers I have built it on getting followed. Not following others and I have attracted like minded people. I encourage all my followers to join me on face book and think DM is a good key to using twitter as a list. I find using DM to be crucial to a marketer or a sharing person to use to make that direct connect to the inbox of that persons personal email…wow…how powerful is that…but do not spam too much by keeping that 25% rule on your promotions.

I always enjoy seeing someone write about the foundation to twittering on Twitter. Nice artcile and good to know who the 3 main guys are who started it. I use twitter as my number one source of traffic, leads and engaging. Some may find it how to believe but in my book Evangelizing Twitter I point out engaging with folks live is easy and a pleasure. When I first open my account in June of 2009 I had no idea I would have such a huge success. I love twitter. It works if you do!
