FaceBook ToolBar Is This In Your ToolBox?

by Steve Shoemaker on September 1, 2010

%keywordThe facebook toolbar is far from new.

But I have to be honest I have never heard of it until a few days ago.

I recently got a new computer so I was trying to incorporate some of the tools I had used with the old computer with the new.

Well one feature I had found was a stand alone facebook share button for your browser.

Click and drag it to the update part of your firefox toolbar (right under your browser) and your all set.

Needless to say I went back to my old stomping grounds but didn’t find it. So I called out my search hound google but no luck there either.

But I did find the facebook toolbar. After reading about it I thought I would give it a try and see how I liked it. My gosh it was annoying!

I would open up my browser and 3 seconds later I would have 50 notifications on the right side of the screen. I was about done with the facebook toolbar but I thought there has to be a way to modify this and there is.

Follow this path quick links>toolbar settings>notifications from there you can either untick the enable option like I did for awhile or now I have compromised with the facebook toolbar and have it set to notify me only with a new friend request in an effort to be a little more responsive and engaging.

The facebook toolbar has a lot more options than that with notifications you can have it notify you of a new message or that all important poke you have been waiting on.

But a word of warning by default the facebook toolbar has all the settings ticked for notifications so if decide to install unless you are a notification junkie I would follow the above  path and take care of that.

Quick run down of why I like the facebook toolbar:

  • I can check messages anytime instead of going to facebook clicking on the messages icon one click and I’m in.
  • I can poke you instantly and reserve the right to do so.
  • I can update my status right there so if there is something real quick I want to share I can and not interfere with what I maybe presently doing.
  • Again I can immediately respond to friend request via the notification or the icon.
  • Most important for me the share button so when I come across something interesting I can immediately share it to my profile and thereby garnering interest of likeminded people and improving chances of even further connecting.
  • None of this works with the facebook tool bar unless you are actually signed to facebook which you can do where? You guessed it in the facebook toolbar.

Well this is about a wrap. What do you think of our little tool here? I would love to hear what you think or any other similar tools in the form of  a comment.

But hey maybe you would just rather share this info and you can I have made it easy( haha Peter Fuller). Just click on any of the facebook and tweet or twitter buttons and you have shared pretty simple huh?

So again what is your take on facebook toolbar would love to hear it!

Take Care,

Steve Shoemaker

Hey Peter,

Yeah was bit of a surprise to me as well. I use it regularly and love how I don’t have to continually log in to facebook to keep up. Have fun with it.

Thank you Maria. I appreciate that yes I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable with the old one she is about 4 yrs old. I have heard of dell’s (what I use) lasting for up to ten years incredible.

Yes Maria as active as you are on facebook this would be very ideal for ya. Hope it works and thanks for the visit.

Hi Steve,

Thoroughly well reviewed!

I, like Peter also use Chrome now. Fire Fox was just far to slow and too many crashes which wore my patience down almost to the point causing me to convert to Mac. Now wouldn’t that be radical??

As far as I know Chrome does not have the identical toolbar but they do have an extension which seems to be very popular called the Facebook Social Plugin but I know nothing about it really.

Hey Marcus nothing wrong with chrome or mac. Watched a special on CNBC here in the states about the history of it all featuring Guy Kawasaki pretty convincing makes me wonder about switching myself. Hey its not exactly a deal breaker just trying to make life easier I’m sure you understand. Thanks as always for your insights.

Never heard of it, Steve, but you know what they say about apps – there’s an app for that! Well, now there’s a toolbar for that! :)

Looks like a great idea for someone wanting to stay on top of their FB activity. I should probably do more of that.

Hi Steve,

I haven’t heard of it either.

I’m going to check into it and see if it’ll notify me of birthdays. I know I can get an email for the week, but I need a daily reminder or I forget.

Thanks for this review, it was very interesting.

Hey Steve,

Thank you for the valauble information but with skype, facebook and the many other things that I have going, this is one I am going to have to pass on. I have been weening myself off of Facebook so much because it used to eat up many hours of my day. I know that Social Media is important to my business but it can also be very distracting! Keep the great tips and tools coming though, I am looking forward to the next one!

Steve Shoemaker September 1, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Totally understand Robert. Jym Tarrant has started a support group ;) . But seriously I can see where it could lead to that but I am the exact opposite give me a reason not to go to facebook and I will be much obliged. I don’t hate it by any means but it just moves to slow for me to get addicted. I am more susceptible to the tennis match of twitter. And thanks for your honesty and the visit.

Hi Steve,

Nice review. I’m wary though, I’ve just about tamed my addictive, non-productive tendency to over use social media sites like Facebook… Not sure if I’m ready to allow them onto my toolbar yet!

Nonetheless it sounds like a useful tool and I’m glad to know about it. Also wanted to add, I’m super impressed with the new look and layout of your blog. Great job!

Jym I had no idea I would be writing to recovering addicts. It’s very brave of you to cut the computer on I have heard of this now here it is in the inner circle we are with you.

Just joking…

You are absolutely right I didn’t think about the other perspective this could be a big time waster. In my recovery group we mainly talk about staying away from twitter I guess you pick your poison.

Thanks for the compliments about the site and for the visit as well.
